The Question of Othering: From Sick Reality towards Hopeful Theorisation
28th and 29th April 2024
Hybrid (in presence attendees / in remote)
Argumentaire
The human being exists in relation to the Other through identification and intimacy, aiming at the integration of humanity based on shared common features and a sense of civil coexistence in all its forms. Therefore, the Other is not the 'devil' or the 'enemy' as portrayed in totalitarian narratives, racial discourses, or religious conflicts. The Other is a reflection of myself, and I am a reflection of the Other. Thus, I am myself when I perceive myself (the collective 'we') within a specific context, and I become someone different when another individual perceives me as contradictory or distinct from them. Consequently, we engage in the same game, attempting to create both destructive and altruistic illusions.
Within these contradictory dichotomies lies the issue of our relationship with the Other, which allows contemporary philosophy to explore questions concerning the ego and the Other within important fields, such as ontology and axiology. This exploration aims to construct new ethical perspectives that consider the Other as a valuable human being and highlight human dignity, which transcends differences, inequalities, geography, and colour. Introspection has become a self-destructive tendency that promotes negative transcendence and uses difference and disparity as arguments for superiority and distinction. However, othering should embrace the values of diversity and difference and uphold the notion of universal humanity, as Levinas asserted when he said, "Man is holier than any holy land."
The question does not end with the theorisation of the notion of Othering, which highlights the human approach. It extends to action and practice, where theory is applied in real-life situations, as dreams alone cannot make reality. Can the discourse of Othering, based on the common humanity we share, be transformed into actual practice between individuals? To what extent can the principles of open Othering be implemented?
